The Zone MP4 Player is coming… Should iPod be scared?

The Zune Player

As discussed back in June in MP3 News Microsoft’s planned iPod killer - The Zune - is due for release in the States on November 14. Just in time for the holiday season!

However, as mentioned in MP4 Soup on October 25, iPod aren’t scared about loosing their market share. “It takes forever,” Apple Co-Founder Steve Jobs told Newsweek in an interview when discussing the introduction of a newbrand into a market.

So should Apple be scared? Possibly. If anything, it might be positive for consumers. Greater competition should at least motivate Apple to increase their iPod functions and reduce their prices. That’s the theory anyway.

Where did MP4 technology come from?

A brief history of MP4 technology according to Wikipedia

MPEG-4 Part 14, formally, ISO/IEC 14496-14:2003, is a multimedia container format standard specified as a part of MPEG-4. It is most-commonly used to store digital audio and digital video streams, especially those defined by MPEG, but also can be used to store other data such as subtitles and still images.”

“Like most modern container formats, MPEG-4 Part 14 allows streaming over the Internet. The official filename extension for MPEG-4 Part 14 files is .mp4, thus the container format is often referred to simply as MP4. Devices that play .mp4 files are referred to as MP4 players.”
