9 Reasons Why The Zune Is Better Than The iPod

Zune PlayerWould you beleive it?! The Zune is starting to get some positive press! Everyone knows that it’s been completely slammed in the press since its launch a few weeks ago. I even contributed to the slamming myself in a previous article (The 10 things wrong with the Zune Player). But how many of those nay-sayers have actually tried it?

In his article at Shoutwire, Leander Kahney discusses his personal experiences from owning a Zune player. Here’s a summary of the reasons he came up with on why the Zune is as good as, if not better than the iPod…

  1. It has built-in Wi-Fi for peer-to-peer song sharing
  2. The Zune’s interface impressed him the most: It’s much slicker and easier to use than the iPod
  3. The Zune’s UI makes great use of 3-D effects and animation
  4. The Zune’s navigation scheme is better-designed and easier to use
  5. The Zune is much more intuitive
  6. You can move sideways through the menu hierarchy
  7. The Zune’s case is attractive and well-made
  8. The screen is absolutely gorgeous. It’s just half an inch bigger than the iPod’s, but it makes all the difference. Video looks great. Photos too.
  9. For $15-a-month, you get an all-you-can-eat subscription service. The marketplace is easy to navigate and has a good choice of songs.

Does this make you want to change your order with Santa this year? :)

Most of these points are either biased or don’t explain exactly why it’s better. It’s “more intuitive” doesn’t give any description whatsoever. All MP3 players are going to look different and have an alternate way of navigating through the menus- it’s a matter of personal opinion. I don’t understand the wi-fi option.. isn’t that basically allowing people to get free music, aka stealing, aka copyright infringement?

Well, who needs simple mp3 playing anymore? At 5 years after iPod’s introduction, what people truly wants is a MULTIMEDIA player and there Zunes fails short: it plays only M$’s own wm and a bastard type of mpeg4 of its own creation when most people now rips DVDs using the .avi format either in DivX or Xvid.
What we need is a player that allows the user to load the latest codecs into it to play any kind of media format he prefers.
Zune, instead, puts the user in a straightjacket imposing what Microsoft wants him to play.
